Śivarāma Swami
On Janmastami I spent the entire day reading books from Govinda Maharaja s library. I did not participate in the temple functions but read and thought mostly about New Vraja Dhama and how Radhe Syama must be. Until late afternoon I sat with Radha Damodara under a weeping willow by the lakeside, and then in my cottage with Them until midnight. The bliss of being immersed in reading Krishna s lila was only marred by the sad news of the bomb-attack upon the devotees in Manipur. What a terrible place this material world is! The only safety is in the spiritual realm.
At midnight I led the kirtana during arati and then respected ekadasi prasadam. On Srila Prabhupada s Vyasa-puja I listened to several recordings by Srila Prabhupada and then participated in the celebrations, leading a two-hour kirtana. Then there was a wonderful feast and I continued my reading. This was Srila Prabhupada s 110th birthday anniversary. All day I was thinking, “I wish Srila Prabhupada had lived past 110 years.”
Today I feel very exhausted. Perhaps that kirtana yesterday was more than what I was up to. I am reading Ananda-vrndavana-campu by Srila Kavi Karnapura and that is giving me great happiness. To chant Krishna s names and to hear His pastimes is the only sustenance of devotees. While reading this book I am chanting a favourite verse of mine written by Kavi Karnapura, which he spoke while still an infant to Caitanya Mahaprabhu,
sravasoh kuvalayam aksnor anjanam
uraso mahendra-mani-dama
vrndavana-ramaninam mandanam
akhilam harir jayati
“Lord Sri Krishna is just like a bluish lotus flower for the ears; He is ointment for the eyes, a necklace of indranila gems for the chest, and universal ornaments for the gopi damsels of Vrindavan. Let that Lord Sri Hari, Krishna, be glorified.”
May that Sri Krishna, whose topmost servant Srila Prabhupada has bestowed upon us His names and pastimes, bless you all.
